The Catch the Rain pilot program provided subsides in Hamilton for the RainCatcher 4000, Frank's Tank, and RiverSafe rain barrels.
This program ceased at the end of 2007.
Rain barrels have been used with success in municipalities throughout Canada and the United States as a component of comprehensive runoff abatement programs.
Rain barrels can help reduce stormwater surges thereby contributing to the protection of residents and their property from flooding and sewer backups. Reducing stormwater surges also protects water quality by reducing sewage-treatment bypasses and polluted runoff volume.
Rain barrels may also be useful in reducing household water consumption as they are a supplemental source of water for lawns and gardens.
