Water Meters & Detecting Leaks

A water meter is a mechanical device that measures the amount of water used in a home.

What are some of the benefits of installing water meters in a municipality?

  • Pay only for the water you use
  • Track your water usage
  • Detect leaks in your water system
  • Decreased water consumption

Pay Only for the Water You Use
Meters allow you to pay only for the water you use. To date, 99.8% of Hamilton households have water meters installed. If there are less than four people in your household and you use water wisely, you will likely see a decrease on your water bill after a meter is installed.

Residents who have chosen not to have water meters installed are charged a double flat rate for water and sewer yearly.

Track Your Water Use
Meters also allow you to track your water use so you can determine if new appliances, fixtures, or habit changes are affecting your water bills.

Decreased Water Consumption
Environment Canada has shown that once meters are installed in a municipality, water consumption initially decreases by between 18-25%. With long-term use, decreases in water consumption level out to between 10-15%. This means that less lake water needs to be treated and less wastewater is sent to our wastewater plants for treatment.

Meters are a regular reminder of our water consumption, and people who are aware are more likely to change their water habits with little or no effort.
